Hatchet review

After being dumped by his girlfriend, Ben and his best friend Marcus take a road trip down to Mardi Gras for some good ol’ fashioned beer, boobs, and parties. Ben, still visibly torn up by his loss, isn’t so quick to party hard. Instead, he drags Marcus on a sketchy cruise of a bayou inhabited by the ghost of a disfigured teen who was burned alive in his home. As one can imagine, the ghost of the teen turns out to be more corporeal than the story lets on, and he begins killing all the passengers that trespass on his property.

I’m still not sure what my realistic expectations for Hatchet were. I’m torn over whether or not I liked it a lot, or hated it a lot. On one hand, it’s a B horror movie with some cult TV actors and actresses that takes place during Mardi Gras. On the other hand, it’s as predictable and flat as every other B horror movie in existence. The dramatic twists aren’t that dramatic and the ending is as hackneyed as they come.

The only redeeming aspect of Hatchet is the acting and writing are surprisingly sophisticated for the genre. With the exception of one or two people, Hatchet provides a list of characters you genuinely root for. Ben and Marcus have an excellent camaraderie that provides genuine humor in the otherwise dark and terse film.

While not a perfect example of a horror movie, Hatchet could have done worse with what it had.

I enjoyed the gore in this one but I felt it was a little too silly and cliched. The actor was good and you can tell that the director and cast had tons of fun making it but I just wish it was so much like every other slasher film.

I agree with Carl. Though it is a fun movie to watch with a crowd.
