The Echo

Horror movies can be pointless yet still score major entertainment and scare points. Sometimes, though, a horror movie is way too similar (even if this is said to be unintentional) to another film to be enjoyed and remembered on the basis of the above-mentioned points.

STARRING

Part coming of age drama, part horror thriller, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the vampire film masterpiece I had been waiting for. My biggest grievance with this horror sub-genre is that a lot of movies glamorize the vampire affliction, portraying it as a hip- to-be-undead lifestyle.

Last House on the Beach

DIRECTOR
Franco E. Prosperi
STARRING
Florinda Bolkan, Raymond Lovelock, Flavio Andreini, Sherry Buchanan, Stefano Cedrati
It’s Last House on the Left on the beach with a little nunsploitation added to the mix for bad measure! Despite of the obvious fact it’s a EuroSleaze knock-off of the Wes Craven thriller, LAST HOUSE ON THE BEACH still manages to work for the type of movie it is.

Lucio Fulci
STARRING

This 1977 giallo (recently released on DVD in the fully restored European version) has introduced me to the mind of Lucio Fulci (Zombie, The New York Ripper) and you can bet I will be visiting his other works soon. I know when a film is something special when I cannot quite figure out as to why that is. THE PSYCHIC is that kind of special!

Fans of Euro-sleazefest pictures beware! This one is completely and utterly underwhelming. The Recently restored 1982 remake of Malabimba, SATAN'S BABY DOLL works on very few levels, unless you are hell-bent on viewing all films of this nature regardless of the consequences.

Long Weekend

DIRECTOR

STARRING

LONG WEEKEND is a unique take on the « Do not mess with the environment: Humans vs. Nature » sub-genre. Released for the first time on DVD a few years ago, the Australian film from 1978 is a realistic horror-thriller with plenty of surprises and chills.

Simon, King of the Witches

DIRECTOR
Bruce Kessler
STARRING
Andrew Prine, Gerald York, George Paulsin, Brenda Scott, Norman Burton
Simon is kind of a hobo. Although, in spite of looking like he’s homeless and living in a sewer, Simon does not act like he’s at a disadvantage in any way shape or form. You see Simon is a magician, a warlock, a male witch, as he puts it.

Hunting Grounds

DIRECTOR
Eric Bilodeau
STARRING
Patrice Leblanc, Patrick Baby, Marie-Eve Lemire, Émilie Gilbert-Gagnon, Luc Rivard
The setting is Quebec, specifically Northern Quebec, the Saguenay region. Sometime in the future, humans have screwed with the environment to the point that only a select few are allowed to go out into the wilderness. The only way of reversing the damage done to the planet is to avoid all contact with the outside, a world now replaced with virtual reality.
