Flight of the Living Dead was the first movie I saw at Fantasia and it was by far, my favorite. Focusing on an air marshal transporting a flamboyant criminal, a rather standard flight turns deadly when a zombie is unleashed in the cargo bay. The plane gets demolished, the crew chewed up and all passengers have to fend for themselves… in coach.
A straight up mockery of zombie movies, Flight of the Living Dead manages to take the suspense and carnage of zombie movies and turn it into a brilliant comedy. The acting is over the top and campy in ways that would make Army of Darkness proud. What’s best is no horror movie trope goes unmentioned. Slutty girls, football jocks, maniacal scientists, a single nun, a pilot on his last flight: it’s all there and it’s perfectly executed.
There’s truly nothing negative to say about this film. It’s gory and fun and if you’ve seen Snakes on a Plane, the inside jokes and subplots become hysterical. Flight of the Living Dead is essentially Shaun of the Dead on speed. And not British. A genuinely great zombie comedy, it’s definitely worth the watch and a few more re-watches.
