Some people get a little finicky with who is chosen for the MASTERS OF HORROR series, but honestly, if you have the ability to make one truly interesting horror film then I think you know what you are doing. Rob Schmidt is only known in the horror realm as the director of WRONG TURN, a film which took a tired old idea and actually did it right. Schmidt fits right in with the new generation of horror directors who are starting to earn a reputation for reinvigorating a genre that many had thought to have died a bloody death at the hands of some faceless slashing maniac in the early 90s.
With RIGHT TO DIE, Schmidt delves into familiar territory once again, throwing in a fair amount of gore and sex to help distract the eye. Martin Donovan (Trust, Amateur) plays Dr. Cliff Addison, a man who has just been caught cheating on his wife. While driving to the country to attempt a reconciliation, he crashes the car and his wife Abby gets burnt to a crisp. Somehow still alive, Abby is stuck in a hospital bed on life support, but whenever she flatlines, her restless (and pretty pissed off) soul) has the ability to leave her body and venture out to seek revenge on those she hates. This causes a little bit of uneasiness with her hubbie, who is trying to terminate her life support.
As always, Donovan is fun to watch and Corbin Bernsen does a fine job in the role of the sleazy attorney. Some might see a similarity in the FX for Mrs. Addison’s skinlessness and everyone’s favorite skinless beauty, Julia (aka Clare Higgins) from Hellraiser 2. No biggie really, seeing how that is probably what a skinless woman would really look like. For those of you who have been waiting for a new skinless woman to enter into your cinematic lives, I think you might have found a new femme fatale in Julia Anderson’s Abby Addison. That is of course unless you like lips on your skinless chicks.
