As I mentioned before, we don’t usually focus on video games here but the folks behind Obscure: The Aftermath were kind enough to pass me a copy of the game and it plays out much like a eighties slasher film, which totally seems to fit here at Oddity, so I thought I should let you all know about it.
For those gamers out there who are familiar with the original Obscure, the sequel picks up a few years after the events of the first, following the survivors as they now begin their college days. A new “drug” made from the crushed leaves of a dark flower that has appeared all over campus is causing some folks to have horrific hallucinations and causes our heroes to once again find themselves immersed in a dark world where they are forced to slash and bash everything around them.
Gameplay is much like most third person horror titles, but one unique feature is the ability to constantly switch between whichever two characters are currently involved in the story, each of which has their own special abilities to get you through certain areas of the game. Get yourself a buddy and they can take advantage of the co-op play and join in as the second character at any time throughout the game.
As a sometimes gamer who is a huge horror fan, moving through the atmospheric landscapes and haunted abodes really sucked me in and made me feel like I was interacting with a horror film. Plus there are many times in the game that stay true to the genre. It has extremely graphic moments yet also finds the time to throw in a little bit of comedy to give you some breathing room before they bombard you with strange dripping mounds of fleshy-gore creature who want nothing more then to rip your throat out.
If you already don’t get enough sleep then this game won’t do much to aid in extending your nightly slumbers, but if you are the type of person who feeds off of waking nightmares and haunted dreamscapes you may need to add this one to your shelf where it will be a welcomed addition.
