The setting is Quebec, specifically Northern Quebec, the Saguenay region. Sometime in the future, humans have screwed with the environment to the point that only a select few are allowed to go out into the wilderness. The only way of reversing the damage done to the planet is to avoid all contact with the outside, a world now replaced with virtual reality.

Part sexploitation and part Giallo, THE SISTER OF URSULA reaches the summit of depraved cinema, while remaining loads of sexy fun… if sexy fun’s your thing! And it serves up a murder weapon so overwhelmingly phallic (not subtly so in any way shape or form) that... well... just see this movie if you can and want.

Recent Canadian films have been lackluster at best, but WHO IS KK DOWNEY? is a breath of fresh air that proves that the Canadian film industry has a future. WHO IS KK DOWNEY? is created and produced by local Montreal comedic filmmakers, Kidnapper Films. This is their first foray into feature films and they definitely have a hit on their hands. I generally try to watch as many Asian movies at Fantasia but I heard so much buzz about this film that I chose this as one of my few North American picks. I'm warning you that this is one of those movies that you will either love or hate. I scoured some user reviews and it definitely skewed towards a younger audience.

I am not as well versed in the cinematic classical horror genre as some individuals are. So I popped the remake of PROM NIGHT in my DVD, and I went in with an open mind. I felt this movie had potential but from the outset there was nothing redeeming about the flick. My one goal in viewing slasher movies, is for the murders to have variety. It's not enjoyable to watch different people get killed in the same manner; it reeks of laziness and a lack of creativity.

Chances are, you’ve probably already seen the trailer for Quarantine, the shot-for-shot American remake of the Spanish horror film [REC], set for release in October of this year. But why should horror fans bother with what’s more than likely another pointless and poorly rehashed version of a great movie when the original is not only an enormous critical success, but is actually bloody terrifying?

TIMECRIMES, the first feature length film from Oscar-nominated Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo (7:35 in the Morning), was released a mere three months ago, and yet word is, it’s already going to be remade by David Cronenberg. Winner of the Best First Feature (Silver) prize at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival and the Next Wave Award at the Austin FantasticFest, TIMECRIMES is a fun little movie about the pitfalls of curiosity and the inevitable dangers of playing with the past.

The idea of some unimaginable creature hunting us down is one of the scariest things I can think of. Films like TREMORS do it with a sense of humour. Films like ALIEN do it in a bleak future. But few films have done it in a time where modern contrivances were nonexistent and the world was nothing more than a few wood buildings scattered throughout the continent. Ah, the old West.

It is very possible that Zach Passero's WICKED LAKE is the sleaziest film I've seen in a very long time. It has buckets o' gore, its female cast covers the spectrum of full dress to "I'm-a-nude-model", and many of the other characters and situations are so strange that it felt like that time when I was called up to the blackboard and for some stupid reason had decided to wear jogging pants. Oh, I knew the answer but I sure as hell wasn't standing up in front of those people. No way. No how.
DIRECTOR
Jody Dwyer
STARRING
Nathan Phillips, Leigh Whannell, Mirrah Foulkes, Melanie Vallejo, Bille Brown, Ken Radley
A good setting goes a long way! The same can be said for technically sound filmmaking and an intriguing story. Although it does break new ground while at times bordering on the run-of-the-mill, director Jody Dwyer’s Dying Breed has enough going for it to deserve a recommendation. In the harsh wilderness of Western Tasmania, four people go searching for the mythical extinct Tasmanian tiger, as well as for clues into the death of team member Nina's sister ten years earlier.

The second installment in the Spanish horror mini-series, TALES TO KEEP YOU AWAKE, tells the story of a young expectant couple, Clara and Mario, who like many dwellers of large urban centres, are looking for a great deal on an apartment. When Mario gets a flyer in the mail advertising a large place for cheap on the outskirts of town, he convinces Clara to visit.
