Some people get a little finicky with who is chosen for the MASTERS OF HORROR series, but honestly, if you have the ability to make one truly interesting horror film then I think you know what you are doing. Rob Schmidt is only known in the horror realm as the director of WRONG TURN, a film which took a tired old idea and actually did it right.

A friendly group of strong women spelunkers meet once a year to go, well...spelunking. Who ever wrote this film, took modern film theory in college. I'd bet money. Or, alternately, I could churn out a rather excellent essay about this film using basic feminist psychoanalysis--and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I am the kind of horror fan that enjoys getting my horror in any form possible and being that I am somewhat obsessed with animation, I adore the fact that Japan feels the need to keep creating more and more horror anime.

This is the first film I have had a chance to check out from director Kevin VanHook. Over the past two years, he has made four feature films, all of which have been recently released on DVD by Anchor Bay.

Masters of Horror: Pro-Life

DIRECTOR
John Carpenter
STARRING
Caitlin Wachs, Ron Perlman, Mark Feurerstein, Emmanuelle Vaugier
During the first season of Masters of Horror, I considered John Carpenter's episode, CIGARETTE BURNS, to be the best entry into the series as well as the greatest thing Carpenter has done since In Mouth of Madness. For the second season, Carpenter chose PRO-LIFE, a script from Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan, who also wrote Cigarette Burns.

Don't ask me why, but I got no complaints about movies that take place in strip clubs. Even if Grace Jones feels the need to do a dirty dance or Salma Hayek must gyrate with a giant snake, it's all good in my book. It isn't much different with Jeff Burr's latest, Devil's Den starring Devon Sawa, Kelly Hu and Ken Foree.

I had heard about NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS when it played at Fantasia last year, but I never had the chance to check it out until Anchor Bay released it recently on DVD. The indie German horror flick was an audience favorite at the festival and it is obviously due to the fact that it is awesomely entertaining.

Masters of Horror: Pelts

DIRECTOR
Dario Argento
STARRING
Meat Loaf, John Saxon
Like many of you Argento fans, I have been a little weary with the last few outings from the Italian director. Things started looking up with Non Ho Sonno (aka Sleepless) and were moving in the right direction, but then he faltered again with Il Cartaio (aka The Card Player), reverting to a more Americanized Argento, substituting his usual atmosphere and vivid style, which we have all come to know and love, for a more linear, bland, straight forward entry into the genre.
