I am not as well versed in the cinematic classical horror genre as some individuals are. So I popped the remake of PROM NIGHT in my DVD, and I went in with an open mind. I felt this movie had potential but from the outset there was nothing redeeming about the flick. My one goal in viewing slasher movies, is for the murders to have variety. It’s not enjoyable to watch different people get killed in the same manner; it reeks of laziness and a lack of creativity.
PROM NIGHT begins with Donna coming home one night only to discover that her dad and younger brother were murdered. She realizes the killer is still in the house and proceeds to hide under a bed. The killer interrogates the mother for the location of her daughter. She refuses, and the killer stabs her in front of Donna. Flash forward a few years later and Donna is living with her aunt and uncle. She is still haunted by the gruesome moments she witnessed, but she is excited about her upcoming high school prom. We witness all the prom rituals; the girl walking down the stairs all dressed up and her boyfriend telling her she looks beautiful, the corsage, the pictures, and the limo arriving. While this is happening, the killer escapes from prison, looking to be reunited with Donna.
I’m usually very patient with movies and 98% of the time I will sit through a bad movie. If it wasn’t for my girlfriend’s insistence to continue watching, I would have shut it off midway through the almost ninety minute running time. As I alluded to, I hate unoriginal slayings. With that being said, the killer uses only a knife to dispatch his victims. What’s worst is that he basically ends up stabbing them all to death with the exception of one throat slash. I would of liked to see him smash someones head on the sink or choke someone with an extension cord. Upon the police hearing of the killer’s escape, they decide to let Donna stay at her prom instead of shacking her up in a safehouse. They weren’t sure if he was going after her but why take the chance; they knew his motive.
I felt like PROM NIGHT could have been decent but it was completely uninspired. I didn’t care for any of the characters and it seems like the producers didn’t care about making a quality product. I couldn’t find one redeeming quality about the film - not even any nudity. And you know that’s a shame.
