Spiral is a fantastic movie. Realistic and deeply uncomfortable, Spiral follows the life of the artistically gifted Mason: a telecommunication loner and all around superfreak. Mason is hyper-socially inept, choosing to spend his free time listening to jazz and painting portraits of women that he longs to be with. Mason’s lack of social graces is reflected in the only relationship he seems to have—with his arrogant and impatient boss. Yet, when the eccentric and quirky Amber is thrust into Mason’s life, Mason is forced to re-examine his tentative grasp on reality and take the plunge into territory he’s completely unfamiliar with.
Where Spiral diverges from the clichéd romantic comedy that’s overused this plot to sell popcorn combos, is in the bleak and eerie setting in which the movie occurs. Perpetual rain, dim lights, shadows everywhere—Spiral is the epitome of haunting. Mason’s troublesome background and questionable grasp on reality begin to fracture as the movie progresses to its surprising finale. You’re forced to question what you believe and what you think Mason is trying to make you believe the whole duration of the film.
Grim and unflinching, Spiral is a fantastic film.
