The Tripper review

The Tripper posterIf you ignore the plot of The Tripper, it’s actually a solid slasher movie. Spawned from the mind of David Arquette, (you know, the guy married to Monica from Friends), The Tripper follows six modern day ‘hippies’ on their way to a free love festival in the woods. Read: a party in the middle of a forest where drugs, alcohol and gratuitous sex are in abundance. Naturally, there’s a deranged killer on the loose that has an aversion to hippies from many years before when, (I’m not shitting you), hippies inadvertently killed his mother.

Decked out in a Ronal Reagan mask, the Tripper (haha, get it? The Gipper?), brutally hacks the horny and drug addled teens to death in your typical slasher movie ways. There’s really nothing out of the ordinary in The Tripper. You can call who the killer is from the moment you see him, the dialogue is ripe with the rejected lines from all three Scream films, and the acting is all over the place. But somehow, The Tripper doesn’t fall over itself and provides genuine entertainment.

If this movie was trying for a political message, it fails miserably. If it’s aiming to be a satire on the genre, then you have a good time ahead of you.
