Montag the Magnificent is an illusionist who seemingly dismembers women on stage in front of large crowds of people. Once the body parts come off and the blood pours, the audience is shocked and disgusted, only to have the girl reappear without a scratch on her. Unbeknownst to the audience and the police, dead bodies keep turning up sporting the exact markings as Montag’s volunteers.
Like many who saw the original Herschell Gordon Lewis version of The Wizard of Gore, I was perpetually muttering, “That looks so fake, that’s so unbelievable”. With the 2007 remake, you’d be hard pressed to find a single person that would dare make such a claim. The Wizard of Gore is thankfully not a shot for shot remake of the original, but incorporates the more gothic and twisted elements of our society into the film to make it all the more terrifying. Crispin Glover finds his niche with the insane and troubling Montag, providing one of the creepiest performances of his career. That’s including both Charlie’s Angel’s movie, too.
If you’re into gorefests with a ton of cornsyrup and fake guts, The Wizard of Gore comes highly recommended.
